For your family enjoyment there is a huge supply of board games in the cabinet to the right of the fireplace, outdoor games in the laundry room, a quick pop up tent and sleeping bags in the entry closet and a Sony PlayStation and a Wii game system in the cabinet in the bunk-room. The bedding for the pull out couch in the living room is in the cabinet to the left of the fireplace. For your convenience there is an iron in the laundry room, a hair blower and a make up mirror in the cabinet in the master bath and a Krups espresso maker on the kitchen counter (Krups Espresso Mini Instructions). The already well stocked kitchen has been beefed up with extra dishes, glasses, pots and pans and utensils. Make sure the kids check out the playhouse. You can access the gardens behind the house by going down the road and making your way up the winding paths. It is easier than using the stairs on the left side of the house. You may see deer back there and in front as well.
Here is a quick tip for using the indoor and outdoor wood burning fireplaces. Carolina Cabin Rentals will deliver firewood to the home before your arrival or you can purchase firewood on Route 105 not far from Deerwood Retreat. They even have a sign up saying they are open 24/7. Instead of using newspaper and kindling, I have found an easy method that works every time. Start the fire using one of those quick lighting logs laid flat in the hearth. You just light the paper wrapper in three places and up it goes. Then add one or two real logs on top in a tee pee configuration to promote air circulation and draft. Once the wood logs catch, add logs as needed to keep the fire going. These easy lighting logs can be purchased nearby at the Food Lion in the barbecue supply aisle. I think it is aisle fourteen. Get one per fire that you plan to make. For the environmentally conscious among us, there are easy burning logs made out of recycled coffee grounds. These burn cleaner than than real wood logs. I believe they are sold under the name Java Logs.
On your way up to Deerwood Retreat after turning onto Seven Devils Road, you will pass tennis/pickle ball courts and a playground. Further up there is Otter Falls Trail. The trails require easy to moderate exertion and are well marked. Take a picture of the trail map in the parking lot before venturing out. These amenities are available for your use as guests.
When driving in please do use the written directions provided by Carolina Cabin Rentals. We found that Google Maps GPS told us we had arrived when we were actually behind the house. There is just one more switchback right followed by an easy right turn onto Deerwood Trail. You can't miss the "No Outlet" sign. There won't be any traffic and the end of road privacy makes it so peaceful.
